The “Key Trends Affecting the European Defence Technological Industrial Base (EDTIB)” project, commissioned by the European Defence Agency (EDA), started in November 2017. It aims to provide fresh analysis on the state of the EDTIB and its possible evolution in light of recent regional and global developments.

The research will provide a comprehensive assessment of the European defence industry landscape by examining the key trends, challenges and opportunities affecting the EDTIB, from both regional and global perspectives, and relevant European governments’ policies and defence industrial strategies. It will also consider the possible impact of recent EU initiatives, including the European Defence Fund and Permanent Structured Cooperation, on the EDTIB.The project will use quantitative statistics to underpin the analysis.

The Consortium selected by the EDA is led by the International Affairs Institute (Istituto Affari Internazionali – IAI) and comprises two other European think tanks – the Netherlands Institute of International Relations (Clingendael Institute) and the French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs (Institut de relations internationales et stratégiques – IRIS). The Consortium also sees the participation of Associate Experts from the German Council of Foreign Relations (Deutsche Gesellschaftfür Auswärtige Politik – DGAP), the EU Institute for Strategic Studies (EUISS), the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS).
